I’ve been working in clinic for over 8 years and also studied Swedish massage, so I like to mix techniques to get the best results. In Chinese medicine, we look at how different issues are connected — it’s rarely just one thing causing the problem. With experience, I’ve found that this approach can really make a difference.
I have a philosophy in clinic that it is a safe space for everyone regardless of who you are or where you come from. Everyone is treated equally.
Everyone always asks if it’s going to hurt. I have learnt over time to start off gentle with patients, especially if it’s someone’s first time having needles. Other patients like the feel of qi, so I always check in through the treatment to see how people are feeling.
My aim in clinic is to treat as effectively and concisely as possible. Many patients come into clinic and relax instantly. With initial consults, there are many personal questions, but this is to help me fully understand your complaint. What I tell all my patients is that you are in control of this treatment, and there is never any pressure from me. We take it at your pace, and as a result, I have built up a very loyal patient following.
Highly recommend anyone to see Stephen for any health related issue, i've now retired my western doctor and will see Stephen first for any health issues.
My focus is on listening to your story, then crafting a treatment that relieves pain, calms stress, and restores balance - whether it’s musculoskeletal issues, women’s health, or overall wellbeing.
I’m currently researching how Chinese and Western medicine can work together in my Master’s at the University of Auckland. You’ll always see me when you visit - my goal is simple: honest, professional care that helps you feel better.
Very fine needles are used all over the body and inserted into meridians, points and interconnect the entire body. Moxa can be applied to needles or used alone to help move qi and resolve pain. You will feel very relaxed after.
Cupping is excellent at breaking up pain stagnation (pain) in the body. It is like having a deep tissue massage in 5 minutes. Guasha (skin scrapping has a similar effect but tends to bruise more, but is very effective.
I use patent formulas and sometimes modify them to fit the patient’s complaint. Sometimes I will use needles and herbs together, other times herbs only. Herbal medicine is a deep passion of mine.
I trained in Swedish massage and Tuina (Chinese massage) these are often intertwined into a treatment.
Many people new to acupuncture find it amusing when I ask to look at their tongue and take their pulse. It is a very informative way to see what is happening internally with your qi, blood and organs.
I have had an amazing experience at The Health Clinic. Stephen was so knowledgeable and fully listened to all my issues so that we could come up with a plan to try and solve it. I always look forward to my appointments and cannot recommend it enough!
We start with a relaxed chat about what brings you in—your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and goals. I’ll also use Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostics (like tongue observation and gentle pulse checks) to get a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the surface.
Based on our conversation, I’ll explain a tailored plan: how many sessions we’re likely to need, which acupuncture points we’ll focus on, and any complementary techniques (cupping, moxibustion, or herbal suggestions) that could support your healing.
You’ll lie comfortably on the treatment table while I gently insert ultra-fine, sterile needles into specific points. Most people feel a mild tingling, warmth, or “heaviness” (this is called de qi—a sign the treatment is engaging). If anything feels uncomfortable, let me know immediately.
Once the needles are in place, you’ll rest for 20–30 minutes. This is your time to unwind—many people drift off to sleep or simply enjoy the calm. I stay nearby to adjust needles as needed and answer any questions.
